Have a nice condition Evinrude 9.9 and I got it to run (somewhat). It is misfiring and I am wondering where the points are where I can adjust them at as well as the bold size on the flywheel. I am suspecting that the points are there but am not certain. Any info will help! Thanks!

Re: Resurrecting 1981 9.9 Evinrude

9.9/15hp's made after '76 have CD ignition (black box w/wiring harnesses on starboard side of cylinder head). If yours is an '81, you have no points. You should get a strong blue 3/8" spark from each plug lead using an open-air tester. If you're getting that, and your flywheel key is in place and intact, and you have champion QL77JC4 plugs gapped to .030", and you have proper compression, and if you have the proper fuel/air mixture delivered to the cylinders... You get my drift. If it is a '74-'76 motor, you have a low-tension magneto, w/pointsets and condensers under flywheel and external coils.

I don't know offhand what size socket fits the flywheel nut.

If you're unsure of the year, post the model number.

Good luck!

I posted the year in the title. Its a 1981.

Another problem is that the throttle handle and plate will not freely turn unless acted upon with much force to the full throttle position. Any way to fix that?

Thanks for your input!

Re: Resurrecting 1981 9.9 Evinrude

Is there someone with an identical year motor that can put some pictures up how the motor should look like under the cowl? My electrical connections are all out of place and possibly not right. I have seen Lee Roy's Ramblings and it has helped quite a bit, but it is not quite identical to mine. The problem I'm having with this motor is putting it back together like it was originally. I am trying to make sense of whoever had this motor before me who didn't put it back right 100%. I will upload pictures later on tonight of the motor. Thanks!
