I changed the oil in my boat this afternoon but had an issue with my oil suction pump. I didn't want to drive into town for a new pump, so I just unscrewed the retainer that holds the dipstick to the block and let the remaining oil drain out into a bag that I'd put in bilge.
Now I can't seem to get the retainer back in. It looks like the very first thread is slightly flat. Does anyone know if it is supposed to look that way? Is that a self-locking type mechanism that was designed into the retainer? I can't believe it was damaged during my service...when the retainer came out I just moved it out of the way (still connected to the dipstick).
I ordered a new one, but it looks like they are out-of-stock and won't be available for at least a week. I'll be irked to get the new one and find out that the flat spot is normal and that I just have to fight to get that retainer to take to the block.
Any help would be very appreciated!
EDIT:
-My boat is a 2005 Stingray 195 LS. It has a Volvo Penta 4.3 GL-D and SX Sterndrive.
