I am working on a 1986 johnson 110 model J110TLCDC. It is mounted on a 1994 party bardge 24 pontoon. My problem is when wot timing is set correct 27-29 before tdc per manual, setting wot timing up per posts on forum, I get a bad miss and shake from 1500 to 3200 rpms. Starts and idles fine and after 3200 rpms runs very smooth and runs up to 5800 rpms 2 people 20gal of gas and a 14x13SST prop. I just rebuilt both carbs, did spark test, jumps 1/2 inch with bright blue spark, and did compression test as follows, #1(113)#2(117)#3(114)#4(102). I did a decarb about 2 hours ago on run time. I realize #4is a little low but did not know if it was enough to matter. After running for an hour or so plugs look great just like they should. My main question is when i retard the timing 8 degrees motor runs so much better through low and mid rpms no missing no shaking. It also runs great up to full rpms although I loose about 300 rpms which puts me at 5500 right at where i should be a wot. It just sounds right, no hesitation or studders. I have done link and sink. Will retarding timing 8 degrees hurt the motor? Is the compression gap bad enough to really be concerned or could that be causing the problem? I am very happy with the performance at this setting. Thanks to everyone on this forum!!! Very helpful and informative.

You may have sheared your flywheel key. Are you certain of your timing specs and marks?

I assume it is correct. I bought the boat a year ago and when I checked timing then it was the same as it is now and that was perfect acording to manual. But I will try to do some checks to see if mark has moved.

I'm certain the mark has not moved...I was just asking if you know exactly what marks to look for.

Re: retarding timing 1986 J110????

On top of flywheel it has tdc followed by degree markers from 4 to 36. I removed and grounded plugs 2 3 and 4 and put a spark tester on #1 set to 7/16 of a inch. I then have my wife turn motor over and point timing light at degree marker. My selco book says to set maximum advance at 27-29 btdc. I put white out on 24 degrees marker doing what post said on forum. The forum said when actually running at maximum advance on water timing would advance by another 4 degrees puting me at 28 btdc. If i am doing something wrong I would love to get some advice.

Re: retarding timing 1986 J110????

I did the timing and link and sync on my 1988 Johnson 110 last summer.
As I recall, step 1 in the timing procedure was to confirm the correct position of the timing arrow. (the piece that can be adjusted)
It's imperative to set this up at TDC.
My guess is that you have completed this step but I didnt see it mentioned in your post so I thought I would mention it.

Re: retarding timing 1986 J110????

Just verified tdc and it was set perfect. Could someone please check to see if maybe my manual is wrong for full advance timing? It has probably ran at 28 degrees for years without poblems (burnt pistons). Set pickup timing and it seems perfect according to manual but I am still setting full advance timing at about 19 degrees to get perfect performance. I would rather be retarted than advanced but was just wondering if running this retrarded would have adverse affects on motor. Just another small note, alot of the things in the manual that applies to v4 v6 motors from 86 on do not apply to this motor. For example link and sink is done according to manual prior to 1986. Thank all of you for your help so far.
