Retrieval approach angle?

I have a bunk trailer.

Is there a recommended minimum approach angle when retrieving at the ramp?

Under the stress of trying to hit my target with beginner skills, I've come in with my stern at least 30 degrees off center, but noticed that the bunks and guide posts "caught" the bow and straightened the hull as I gently motored forward.

While that method worked to get me back on the trailer, my concern is for the lower hull. I'd rather hone my skills and hit the trailer dead straight, but until I can do that, am I hurting anything by letting the bunks pivot the hull that much?

I do notice some light scuffing of the lower hull (bunk rash?), but no crazing or cracking of the gel coat.

As long as you "hit" the bunks at a low speed it's no big deal.

Fairly common problem even if you hit it dead on. On most ramps the inclination is steep enough to keep the stern floating above the bunks while the bow centers itself and stays put. This problem is worse with wind and current. Your procedure to pull out SLOWLY and let the boat settle onto the bunks is the correct one.

here is a trick that very few know.... position your body on the center line of the boat if at all possible.... use absolutely no more throttle than idle and simple steer for the center of the trailer..... you will never accurately visualize the approach angle sitting at the side of the boat and looking at the center of the trailer.....
This is what causes so many people to have to make huge corrections just before hitting the trailer because they are coming in several feet further right than they think they are.... they steer left at the last minute and put the bow off the left side of the trailer and the stern off the right.... sound familiar?

I learned that last year, it works great! Plus you can see a lot more by standing up.
