Re: retrofitted starter

You need the components of the standard electric start kit #0171845, available through authorized dealers.

The kit is shown in the 1976 Outboard Acessories list at http://shop.evinrude.com/

Navigate to Parts, then choose "OB Accessories" in the drop down window, then "Electrical 1976".

The kit does not require a change in flywheel, but does not provide charging either.

I'm adding electric start to my motor. It probably wouldn't be worth it to buy a new kit as it costs around $500.
I shopped ebay and picked up a bracket, starter and solenoid.
If you're a patient bidder, you should be able to get one for under a $100.

if you find one for $100 buy it. the complete set up, will cost you atleast $200. does you flywheel have the teeth on it for the starter to engage.

I was not recommending that you buy the kit, rather that you see what parts are needed to make it work.

Unless something changed, the stock flywheel had teeth for the starter; but, as stated before, it will not provide charging.

While charging would be a nice convience it isn't necessary. You can start the motor many many times as well as running lights and the occasional pump.We used to go
3 to 5 weeks of light weekend operation without charging with just a good automotive battery.Battery life will be longer if charged regularly.
