Rev Limiter?

Does anyone know if my Mercruiser 260 (GM 350) has a rev limiter on it or not? It does not have electronic ignition, plain ol' points distributor! Still having a power loss/rpm drop between 3500-4000 RPM (after throttling to about 3500 engine slowly accelerates on its own until hits 3600-4000 and drops back down to 2500-3000, and sometime pops loud and on rare occasions stalls). Brand new ignition system (points cap rotor condenser coil plugs....timed at 8 BDC), changed fuel filter/water sep, rebuilt carb, and ran out of gas can to eliminate tank probs, changed fuel pump.....no change. Someone suggested a faulty rev limiter, but I am not sure if this motor has one or not. Any help greatly appreciated!

Jim

Re: Rev Limiter?

No it does not.
Rev limiters are on the Thunderbolt V ignitions.
All prior (Thunderbolt IV, and good old breaker ignitions) do not have a factory rev limiter.

jim , are you setting points with a dwell meter or a feeler gauge? i used to set points on these with a dwell meter, had come backs, threw the dwell meter away 20 years ago.been setting the points with a feeler gauge and no problems.

Re: Rev Limiter?

John,

I set the points initially before I timed the engine using a feeler gauge. Then I used a dwell meter because the way they were set the dwell was just under 25 and needed to be 26-31. Speaking of which, 26-31 seems like a big gap....whats optimal? Will a point gap of .16-.19 cause a 6 degree shift in the dwell? And could that really be the problem? Maybe the points are slipping (or slipped?). Thanks for the reply, I will check it out again!

Jim
