I have always heard you can give it some gas , but to keep it below 1500 rpms on muffs .

I sometimes blip the throttle up to 1500ish. Maybe even 2000. As part of running elixir I go 1500rpm for 5 minutes per VP.

Know your water flow so youbdont starve the pump.

I agree that 1500 RPM is about all you want to do while running off of the hose. A good way to tell if the engine is getting enough water is if the muffs are still spitting water out the sides, then you have enough pressure/flow going. If the muffs are not spitting any water while the engine is running, then you may not have enough going to the engine.

Regarding flowing through the engine, it should start coming out of the exhaust within 20-30 seconds of engine start. There is no pee-hole if that is what you are askin'.

Why would you want to do that? Unloaded engine will easily overev on the muffs, and it serves no useful purpose. As Maclin said, shortly after start up water will be running on the ground in buckets. Of course if all the coolant drains aren't closed, the water could end up inside the boat.
