reverse dosent work mercruiser 120

reverse doesnt engage forward works fine but when i put it in reverse the motor just revs and when out of the water in forward the prop is in gear but in reverse it spins freely to starboard and port

How hard does it shift? You shouldn't be able to turn it clock - wise in reverse. Jefff

it shifts normal not to hard or soft doesnt engage the prop turns freely clockwise and counter when in reverse

That's not good, You shouldn't be able to turn the prop clockwise in reverse.That would mean it's engaging The only time the prop should go both ways is in neutral. If it worked fine before I doubt if its an adjustment. Does it grind? We're talking alpha? I would drain the lube and look for metal for starters. Its possible the gear is shot. I would wait for some more feedback from some of the other members before I started to sweat. If you have metal its not good. If you do I wouldn't run it because you may damage the upper, if you haven't done so already.Jeff
