reverse dosent work mercruiser 120

When I shift in reverse the engine revs but the prop doesnt turn. I took it out of the water and shifted in to reverse and tried to turn the prop and it turns freely in both directions. when it is in forward it works fine. I am stuck dont know what to check...

Sounds like the shift cable needs adjusting or the control box checking for wear.
