reverse fuel gauge

bought this boat end of last summer. only out twice with .thought we had bad fuel gauge .today i noticed when ignition is on the is no reading like tank is empty. if i turn ignition off it gives correct reading. first time we took it out the battery died could the fuel gauge be draining the battery? what do i do reverse the wires? thanks

You don't list any information about your boat, so I am going to assume you have a built in tank with a standard dash mounted gauge.

There should be 2 wires from the sender on the top of the tank. The (usually) pink wire goes to the center post on the fuel sending unit. There should be a (usually) black wire on one of the 5 screws that hold the gauge into the tank. This is the ground. DON'T REVERSE THEM!

You have the 12v+ lead from the gauge hooked up to the wrong power source. It should be connected to the I or A terminal on the ignition switch or daisy-chained to the 12V+ power connection at the gauge next to it.

sorry guys its a 1985 thundercraft 140 hp mercury thanks for your help tomorrow i will check the wireing
