Reverse Gear is out in my Evinrude 150XP and I need some help please

I believe its a 86 model the Mod # is E150STLCDC. My mechanic tells me the 3 prong reverse gear has been worn out is the reason i dont have reverse. He says they have changed to a 6 prong gear now and i needed to change to that. He quoted me $1500 which is almost what I paid for the whole boat so I was wanting to do this myself to save some money. Can anyone give me some advice on this like would i be better or putting another 3 prong on or switching to 6 and do they even still offer the 3? Any advice, videos, or instructions would be deeply appreciated. I still have forward so I wont have to tackle this until I have plenty of info. I've taken the lower unit of a 25 horse all apart before so have alittle bit of a idea what it looks like in there but still very green. Thanks for any help you can give...

Frankly I don't buy that explanation for a minute! However, you do not specify exactly what takes place when you attempt to shift into reverse... and did this problem come slowly into being over a period of time, OR did it occur suddenly, OR did it show up after some other repair such as installing a water pump, etc?

If the lower unit has been off for some reason.... and prior to the removal of the lower unit the engine shifted properly, but after the removal this shifting problem came into being either suddenly or slowly... I would suspect that someone has turned the shift rod out of adjustment, a adjustment that is critical and must be exact (as follows).

1979 thru 1986 - All V/6 Crossflow models = (L) 22-1/16" - - (XL) 27-1/16" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral.

The guy i bout it from told me it was out last jan. He said his mechanic said to just drive it until forward went out cause it would only be like $200 more to fix both while he has it apart so he used it for a couple of yrs that way and i used it all last summer that way. I never have tried puting it n reverse for fear of messing up forward so I dont know what it does but my mechanic said it grinds. I took it in for a new water pump and had him check the reverse and thats what he told me.

If nothing else you can purchase a used gearcase and be done with it.

But before that, as mentioned, I'd check to make sure the shift linkage isn't just out of adjustment. One thing you can try is to disconnect the shift cable at the engine and see if it will shift properly by moving the shift linkage at the engine fore or aft. Be aware that it won't shift properly without the engine running, you'll at least need to spin the prop by hand so that the clutch dog will try to engage the gear.
