reverse gear not ingaging

I have a 81 Evinrude. took it out yesterday, gear went in forward and reverse well.<br />at the dock before loading I slow down and and tried to go in reverse but it sounded like <br />it was tring to but, slipping. I move the gas to rev. up more. Could this be the problem.<br />Any help would be great.<br /><br />Evinrude.

what evinrude is it? it could be the gears rding on top (best way I candescribe it) of eachother

I have a 90hp Evinrude. It does sound like it is tring to go into gear but does not catch. I think I have the motor reved up to high. <br />Can any one help?<br /><br />81 Glastron

When I put the lever down in reverse the prop feels solids and in gear.<br />with the reverse ingaged I give a little force with my hand on the blades and it jumps out of gear. What could be the problem. <br /><br />81Glastron

Hi, Your engine shouldn't be idling higher than specified when shifting gears. If they aren't bad now they soon will be. you may need to adjust your shift linkage.<br /><br />Rich
