does anyone know why this would be happening on my 94 40 horse yamaha, worked fine one day and grinds the next, if i disconnect the shift cable at the motor i can put it in reverse manually, but it will pop out of gear, how do i adjust the linkage on this motor, or does it sound more serious than that..
Thanks
tom

if it pops out of gear
clutch dog or shifter spring is bad
drain lower fluid and see if chunks come out

remove cable and shift it by hand
see if it stays in gear

yea, it will go fine in reverse when shifted without the cable on it, i tried it a little while ago, it seems like the throttle box just isnt pushing it all the way into reverse

Re: reverse grinding when trying to shift

hey adjusting the shifter cable didnt do anything still having same problem anyone have any other suggestions?

also on another note if i run at wide open throttle the motor will start to hesitate and sound like it wants to cut out, if i back it down to about 3/4 throttle it will run good, any thoughts on this??

Re: reverse grinding when trying to shift

have you fixed this yet? if not, mine does the same thing. It happened to me when I dropped into reverse too soon after letting off on the fast idle??similar to a neutral drop in your car. Someone describe what the problem was on here and I?m sure you could find the thread by searching my name. Basically your shift cables connect to a vertical rod that the cables turn one direction for reverse and the opposite direction for forward. The test is to disconnect the cables at the motor and manually move the metal slider into gear to see if reverse engages, which it sounds like that?s what happens for you. You just need to replace the rod assuming that?s the problem. Good news is its 25 bux. Bad news is you have to remove the power head to get it out. if you have taken care of it already, was that the problem? how bad was it to replace?

Re: reverse grinding when trying to shift

My 115 started to do that also. I had to replace the shift cable as there was some play in it. Every once and a whyle i would hear the gear just a little like i was about to shift to reverse and and moving the lever too slow and letting the gears rub. I found some cables on e-bay and it fixed it up. I think it happened cause i run the wires through a hole in the splashwell and as i was turning i didnt have a rubber boot to keep the cables from rubbing the fiberglass hole in the splashwell. So as i was turning left to right the cables were rubbing and wore them out. Sucks. I still want to get one of those mesh looking covers that go around all the cables to protect them. Good luck.
