I was having some work done on the lower end of my motor and figured it was a good time to replace the rusted out reverse hook that didnt engage. I followed the reapir manual instructions. Everything seems to work fine. My question is when should the hook be engaged so the engine can not lift .Currently it is engaged when its in reverse(of course) and also when in neutral, it disengages when in forward gear.Is this correct or should it be disengaged while in neutral. I can easily adjust it so it only engaged while in reverse but being fairly new to engines I wasnt sure if being engaged in neutral was normal.

Sounds like its working fine. You normally aren't moving in neutral so it doesn't matter about raising the motor. I remember when I was a kid my Step-dad would ease the boat over submerged logs and let the motor ride over them. I always thought that was a neat trick as long as you aren't going too fast. That kinda gave me an idea how the lock worked.

I like them disengaged in neutral and foward, when beaching a boat. .02. Never understood the reason for neutral lock.

I think the idea behind locking in neutral is so that it cannot become disengaged during the shift from neutral to reverse.
