Well, I had an earlier post on what I think is a "slight bent" shift shaft.

I added an extension bracket (see pic), and 1) tested carefully, while rotating shaft, adjusted to get BOTH F and R. R FIRMLY LOCKS INTO GEAR, in BOTH DIRECTIONS.

Then put the muffs on, and tested. Slides right into gear and revs up in the driveway. Can even feel it popping out of R and F when I shift.

However, when I put in the water, ALL I GET IS A CLICKING NOISE????

When you tear down the lower unit, I think you will find the corners worn off the shift dog. Once rounded off (by slow, sloppy shifting) they no longer will carry any load and they just slip like a worn-out ratchet...

Thanks, I found a junk yard that has the shift rod, and will sell me the whole shift assy for $100.00

Need to remove the power head to replace. Not sure I also want to tear into the lower unit of a 1973 motor??? It's not like this is some kind of a classic.

I think that some times you just need to "learn to live with things??"

Part out the OB and sell the parts on ebay or craigslist.

You will probably be able to more than pay for a running OB with the money you get from parting out the old one.
