Reverse lockdown

My 1977 85 horse merc doesn't lockdown when the motor is running. With the motor off it locks down in neutral and reverse. when I start it and put it in reverse in the water it doesn't. If i give it much gas it pulls itself out of the water. I don't have power tilt. I don't understand. Seems like it should be working when it's running too. Serial number 4724651

It probable is not fully engaged, there is a adjustment on the rod to lenghen it I believe

I went out and put it in reverse and pulled and felt the catch, then I pulled harder and it popped the catch so, your right it isn't fully engaged. I hope your right. Thank you
