I went to anchor my boat today, dropped the anchor, and put it in reverse. Gave it a little throttle and the motor tilted up out of the water.

I dont think this is normal. Is there a lock mechanism of some kind that keeps it from doing this? what does it look like? the motor is an 85hp force 1988

Re: reverse normal or not??

I have the same motor and I have NO tilt/trim on it right now. So mine also comes up and out of the water with to much throttle in reverse. I am not sure of a lock for keeping it down, just the lock that holds it up. If we had the tilt/trim this would keep it from raising up like that. Good question on the lock for locking it down though, anyone?

Re: reverse normal or not??

on the parts diagram, it shows a reverse lock mechanism, i'm assuming this is what keeps the motor from tilting out of the water when in reverse. Maybe its worn or something is broke on it. But i dont think the part is in production anymore. Recent searches come up empty.

Anyone know how this mechanism works? Maybe i can fabricate something.

So how can i fix it ? or get one made?

There should be a reverse lock lever if you have no tilt and trim. I remember removing mine when I installed t&t ablut 20 years ago. I'm trying to remember where it was, but that was a long time ago! I believe it was on the front or transom side of the outboard in the center of the swivel bracket and it would just turn clockwise and counter clockwise to lock or unlock. It was easy to access from the inside of the boat. Wish I could be of more help, but it was a while ago since I had it!

So if the motor had tilt/trim at one point there probably wont be a lock? I know mine had a tilt/trim that I removed because it didnt work :(

Re: reverse normal or not??

it does have the locking mechanism. but it doesn't engage in reverse. I looked at the parts manual and there seems to be a missing spring for it. i got it on order. When i get it i'll post an update also.

on a side note underneath the cowling where the wiring enters the motor. there is a little lever that needs to be moved to engage for the reverse lock to work also. but my spring is missing so its not pressing down or maybe the bracket is just worn out/bent from someone leaving it in the engaged position.

Re: reverse normal or not??

Very interesting, I cant give my reverse (50HP) more than idle throttle or it will pull itself out of the water...Didnt know there was such a stop...I took it for granted and figured it was another bad force design. As far as I am concerned, this is normal for me LOL ;) no racing in reverse BOO
