Greetings! I'm new to the forum, and am looking forward to reading through the archives!

To begin with: I have a 1994 Mercury 40 h.p. on the plywood skiff I built, installed and rigged as per the engine maintenance manual. My question is this: How much reverse "power" should I have? To clarify, when I go into reverse, all I have is idle power. Should I have more?

Thank you for your help!

Kurt Ayres

Re: Reverse on 40 h.p. Mercury

I just removed my cover plate on my 60hp merc. controll box to inspect it for a "low oil warning buzzer" as instructed by TMD. You should have more than idle speed in reverse gear. The simplicity of the mechanisim's that ingage and disingage gears and the throttle all at the same time was easy to see how your "idle throttle in reverse" could happen. I believe a roller or guide in your case may have broke or become out of alignment.My2centsworth.com
