Re: Reverse Problem

I fail to see why people would need my engines HP rating, year model and serial number for a little piece of helpful advice, how ever if you realy need to know and if it would help to cure your rudness to newbeis, she is a 1979 mariner 70hp and i fail to see why you need a serial number to simply say it sounds like ......... or it could be.......... but any ways if your reponse is the norm for this forum where the so called "captains" are rude has hell to us newbies who would rather be on the water than sitting on the net boasting about their vessels, than id rather not be apart of it.

Re: Reverse Problem

I'll apologize for my 'rudeness'...

However... Why we need engine type, hp, etc... is because different engines use different methods of 'reverse lock'...

Help us to help you....

I answer A LOT of questions each day, and many people, newbies and oldies alike, appreciate the fact that the mechanics here give their time, freely...

Re: Reverse Problem

I have the same problem with my boat yesterday, tried to reverse away from the dock and when my brother tried to back up the motor kicked up and about hit me in the head. it's a 85 Bayliner with a 76' 65hp mercury. I know there are locks to prevent this that arent working but I havent figured out what makes them lock, I assume that when you engage it in gear these fingers lock on the trim/tilt bar to keep the motor from lifting in reverse. Any ideas what activates fingers? I cant find anything to trigger it, hopefully I dont have to tear the motor apart (again) to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Reverse Problem

You need to ensure that the motor is lowered down while in forward gear. That lifts the 'fingers' that lock onto the rod. When you move to neutral or reverse the fingers drop onto the rod and stop the engine kicking up... If you lower in neutral the fingers are already down and don't lock properly....
