Reverse problem

I recently replaced my impellar, and when i was putting the outdrive back on the intermediate shift shaft (brass arm located in lwr unit) got bent, tried to bend it back as best i could. Could this be the reason why it is not engaging into reverse all the way. Loud grinding noise in reverse. Forward is fine.

The cable length doesn't change when removing the out-drive.You probably need to work on rebending the arm, the tolerance is pretty small for proper performance.The grinding is from it not quite engaging obviosly.

the tolerances between F-N-R on these things is tiny. I was tinkering with my mercury outboard, and when replacing the lower unit after a water pump job, was amazed at the small amount of shift-shart twist puts it in and out of gear. <br /><br />re-bend the shaft, replace the shaft, or try adjusting the shift cable.

if it bent downward you could have damaged the shaft itself or the "C" arm that moves the shift spool in the lower unit.
