reverse problems --- grinding noise

1987 force 85 hp. Runs great forward, but while engaging into reverse it make this grinding noise? but will eventually will go into reverse if I engage it quickly

May need to adjust your shift cable.

The correct procedure both forward and reverse is to quickly "snap" it into gear. You quickly move the control handle either forward or backward about 1/3 of its travel. The grinding you are hearing is the drive dogs rattling against each other. Continued abuse like this will result in worn drive dogs and popping out of gear under power.

You may also need to adjust your shift linkage. Check for other threads that explain how to do this.
