Reverse will not engage

Hello Guys, I have a 1997 120 force with a quick silver shifter. While in reverse I ran into a stump and now when I shift into reverse it will not go into gear, it clicks and grinds but does not engage. The forward gear seems to operate ok. I am a rookie with outboard motors; any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to iboats, Doug. OUCH! I hate when that happens!<br />It may be all the cogs off the revese gear in the lower unit are now gone, or it could be the hub has "spun-out" of the prop. It is designed to do this, to give a last-chance of saving the gear train.<br />Remove the prop and take it to a prop shop and have it "re-hubbed",and keep your fingers crossed...Because it gets expensive if it didn't do it's job.
