You sure the cotroller and cable are working correctly?<br /><br />You say,<br />"How much wear is tolarable?" <br /><br /> Obviously if something is worn to the point where it no longer works it's worn out.<br /><br />Do you have the lower unit removed?<br /><br />What happens when bench tested? is it possible to "find" reverse?<br /><br />You know the shift shaft tends to only rotate in one direction most of the full rotation is forward gear then a brief nuetral then a brief reverse, turn some more and forward again.<br /><br />If reverse feels iffy or nonexistent during the bench testing, you'lle need to tear it down and find the worn or bad components allowing the internal tolerances to get out of spec.
