Having a problem with shaking in reverse 1998 Johnson 175 op on 20 ft center console motor shakes bad when put in reverse. Ans boat barley goes backwards motor runs fine in forward prop is in perfect cosmetic shape. Also I've noticed that from a stand still if I "sting it" the butt or rear of boat goes way down under hard acceleration. Is that normal? It just seem to be ridding low in rear. What can I do to fix that? It has a 15x17 alum prop on it now

Re: Reverse

You have two problems.

The reverse drive gear in the gearcase has probably shed some teeth. A common consequence of slamming it into Reverse while moving forward.

Your trim problem while hard accelerating could simply be a matter of not trimming the outboard all the way in (down) before accelerating.

You might need to be more gentle with your throttle.

Re: Reverse

How will I know if gears or teeth are missing? Also for hard starting its trimmed all way down or anyway for that matter and its the same. But now I'm more worried about reverse

Re: Reverse

Another possibility is that the shift assist switch is sticking, in reverse. The shift assist switch kills spark to 1/2 the motor.

Drain the lower unit oil through a strainer, a good amount of metal contamination would be a clue something aint right within.....

Any idea where that's at? I do have plenty of "throttle" to rev motor just shakes bad almost as if I was running aground or kicking up mud

Re: Reverse

Shift assist switch is located on shift arm, about 2/3 back on starboard side of motor. Look at parts diaghram on Crowleymarine website parts list.

Re: Reverse

Just disconnect the shift switch wires once and see what happens. They should be black and black/yellow.
