Revive after 2 years of sitting...

I have a 1978 115HP Evinrude that's been sitting up for about 2 years. I put it in storage because it used to start up just fine, but when underway it would completely shut down and not start back up. Once I got it home and cooled off it'd start right back up again.

My dad and I pulled it out the other day and he decided to try to start it up. Well, he hooked it to the 2 yr old untreated gas and sprayed some starter fluid in the carbs and off she went idling just fine. Then I started browsing this board and found out how bad of an idea both of those decisions were.

Since then it hasn't been run. I've installed a new ignition switch since the old one was beginning to not accept the key. Other things I want to do are rebuild the carbs, install a new waterpump since this one hasn't been changed in over 5 yrs :( and decarb the engine.

What else should I do apart from the above, greasing everything up that needs it, changing plugs, and new gas before I put her in the water for a test run?

It wouldn't hurt to check the compression. Everyhting else sounds pretty good.

why was it shutting off? running hot? power pack? coils starting to go bad? lack of fuel? do you have a manual. if not go to kencook.com and get one. read "awakening a sleeping motor" us the red 'search' function at the top of the page. it's got everything you need. then ask what you don't understand or a confused about. this is a great place to get help. welcome to I boats. tashasdaddy - I'm not sure why it was shutting off. That's part of the reason I want to get it back on the water to troubleshoot because it would sit and idle all day long. I don't think it was overheating because I tested the overheat horn this weekend and it worked. Some days it would get up on plane and run for an hour or so with no problems, other times it would plane out but it'd hiccup every once in a while, then other days as soon as I pull out of the dock and throttle up it'd die immediatly. I never looked at it much back then, but when looking it over a few days ago I found a loose wire to the top coil on the starboard side and the bottom coil on that side had a wire that was exposed and possibly grounding to the block. Both are fixed now. I purchased a Seloc manual a few weeks ago and find it to be very vague so I'm going to get an OMC manual to compare.

MCM - thanks for reminding me about the fluid in the lower unit. I plan on changing that when I replace the waterpump.
