O.k, new guy here with my first question. I just bought a used boat about 2 weeks ago and have been working on restoring it since. The thing is the boat and motor have been sitting for ( 6 Years ), and my main concern right now is the engine, ( 1982 60 HP Evinrude) and what it'll take to get it back up and running again. The boat was stored under a lean to for all of those 6 years but was put outside and covered with a tarp for a month before i bought it. Only thing i have done to the engine so far was spray some storage oil in each cylinder and rotate the flywheel slowly a few times. Seemed slightly stiff for the first two revolutions but then seemed to rotate easily there afterwards. I then repeated this process a few more times then re-installed the spark plugs. I have a pretty good general idea already that the carbs are all gummed up and will need to be cleaned, but what other things should be done to the engine before i even think of trying to fire it up..? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Check the top secret files at the begining of this forum. There's good info in there for what you're doing.

Where in Ontario are you?

The thread Boobie mentioned pretty much covers it.

As you mentioned, the carb will need to be done. Probably put fresh fuel lines on while you are at it.

All connections regarding the starting circuit should be taken apart, filed and retightened, including grounds. This would be at the battery, solenoid, starter, along with anywhere else you see corrosion on a terminal or connection.

The gearcase will need to be dropped, to install a new impeller. The existing one will be dry rotted. Change the gear oil.

Before you do anything though, check the compression. If the powerhead is no good, this may all be for nothing.

Thanks for the replies guys, i will check out that section of the forum whenever i get chance. As for the things you mentioned i will clean/check those connections for sure, will even apply some dielectric grease to them as well. As for the impeller, i had a feeling i may need to change it, i guess after sitting for 6 years dry rotting doesn't surprise me one bit. However, i don't own a service manual so doing this job might be left to a mechanic. Same thing with the carbs and replacing the fuel lines/fuel filter as well most likely. Changing the gear oil however isn't an issue, I've done that several times and actually bought myself a pump to make my life easier. Anyhow, thanks again for the replies guys.

If you bought an OEM Factory Service Manual you'd be surprised at the amount of work you could do by yourself and save some $$$$.

Check the powerhead harness insulation and wiring for signs of deterioration.....

If you are near Hamilton, you could bring it over and I could help you out.

Sorry HighTrim, i meant to tell you my location in my last post but i totally forgot. I actually live way north in a place called Iroquois Falls Ontario, about 50 minutes from Timmins Ontario. And thanks for the offer by the way, if i did live closer I'd for sure take you up on that offer. Guess for now though I'm gonna consider getting a manual or face spending some serious $$$ to get it fixed.
