I have a boat that had a 1994 60hp johnson with a 2 wire power trim on it. I just put a 1978 85hp Johnson on it with 3 wire power trim tilt on it. I cannot find a wiring diagram that shows me how to rewire the two relays to control the 3 wire trim. If I remove one of the relays it will function the other direction but with both relays it will move very slowly both directions but I know this is not right. Any help?

The problem is that relays supply both ground and power to the PTT motor. At rest the relays provide ground to the PTT motor. when energized, they provide +12VDC to the PTT motor.

Your 3 wire motor has a center winding ground. With the relays, you are shorting half your motor's windings to ground.

I believe you can use the relays to control a 3 wire motor, if you can disconnect the ground from the secondary winding. You still need the primary winding of the relay to have a ground, but if the relay has 5 posts, it should be possible.

The other fix is to install 2 solenoids in place of the relays. A wiring diagram should be easily found.
