I'm restoring a 25' Blackfin Combi with a 454 inboard (just purchased 2 weeks ago). The wiring is a mess with splices and loose connections everywhere. I am planning to do a complete rewire, but I'm unsure of whether to replace/ update gauges. Has anyone had experience with replacing gauges? Is it as simple as pulling one out and dropping a new one in? Also, what gauges would you all recommend and where is the best place to order them?
The boat also has an onboard charger that has never been wired in. It appears to be in brand new condition, but the only wire attached to it is a ground wire. Any ideas on how to do this in a system with two batteries?

Jeff you need to get a Marine wiring manuel, it will tell you the right sizes and color codes. As far as the gauges if you are inclined to change them, replace them with a good quaility, name brand gauge,as far as order how ever you like them.

One thing to keep in mind when changing gauges is that you will most likely need to change sending units also. If you are lucky enough to find out the resistance ranges of your current gauges, you can replace with gauges of the same range.

Sand all your connections, solder the wires, use liquid black tape....waterproof all connections. The guages you have might actually work if the wiring is correct.

Bob
