On a previous post from Joe Reeves (June 9th 2006) he explains how to adjust the rich lean on a 25 HP Evenrude. He entered "slow speed = seat gently, then open 1 1/2 turns. Start engine and set the RPMs to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in the , the RPMs with increase. Lower the RPMs again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you will hit the point where the engine wants to die our or will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point back out the the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting. First question: will these instructions work with a 1989 Evenrude 15 HP? Second question: where he talks about adjusting the RPMs, is this done with the throttle or the idle speed adjustment?

The initial slow speed needle setting that mtr is 2 1/2 turns. After you get that fine tuned you set the idle speed with the throttle.

Another question...Can this be done at home with the engine in a trash can, or do i need to be on the water with the engine in gear?

As long as it is warmed up a barrel will be fine for the slow speed adjustment. When Joe says to reduce the RPMs again, he meant by reducing the throttle.

You'll get your best settings in the water, on the boat and in gear. You aren't going to run it a barrel all the time, are you ??
