I just purchased a new Yamaha 90hp four stroke. My buddy in La hooked me up with a dealer and saved me some major cash. My buddy is shipping me the motor on Friday. I have owned and ran many motors but all were tiller operated. I am going to stick steering in my net boat and bought a motor requiring a control box and cables. I checked with my local dealer on a control box and was told around 400 bucks plus cables. I have seen 703 control boxes on Ebay for about half that. I want to buy a control box and get the right one for my new motor. Also any pointers on rigging my new motor would be appreciated. I am fairly mechanically inclined and taking this on myself.
I use this boat to run nets on the Ohio river and rigging it up to make my work easier.
Thanks in advance.

Re: rigging new 90 four stroke

Randy, I have a 2006 90 Hp 4-stroke Yamaha on a boat that I built. Installation was simple, but I used all new Yamaha trottle/shift, and ignition controls as well as a Yamaha multifunction tachometer. Note that there is an additional cable required from the engine to the tach to indicate engine trim position.

As a fuel injected 4 stroke, this engine is expecting clean, water free fuel. Make sure you have a good quality 10 micron fuel filter in the line going to this engine. Also, there should be no water in the fuel tank. A good O-ring on the deck filler cap and a properly placed fuel tank vent can prevent water ingress. Hope your new engine turns out to be as good as mine has been.

Re: rigging new 90 four stroke

Thanks for the replys. I have decided to bite the bullet and buy new riggings from my local dealer. 350 for a 703 controls and cable is ?? Do you have to have a tach attached to the motor for it to run? Stupid question I know but I read somewhere that someone could not get there motor started until they hooked one up. The motor is going on my commercial fishing rig. I have a tiny tach on all my other motors for maintenance purposes. Thanks again.
Wood I'm glad you reminded me of the fuel issues. I will get me a fuel filter.

You don't need a tach to run the engine, just a control box\harness, battery cables and fuel.
