I've recently acquired a 2008 Stingray 185 with an SX-ALT42 drive and I was doing the routine maintenance check, unfortunately I got carried away and stripped the Bearing Gear threads on the cover (Part #3840848-2). I did not strip the dipstick itself. I was able to take it off and and helicoil a new 1/2 - 13 thread back into it, yes, I did keep track of the shim. Now I'm reassembling it and I have couple of questions:
- Should a sealant be used around the new gasket (Part # 3889782) If so, what kind is best.
- What is the torque on the four bolts that hold the cover (Part #3840848-2) and do you use any sealant on those, it appears to have some white sealant on it when I pulled them off.

Looking forward to getting your input,

Thanks

Gear lube on the gasket.
Light coat of Mercury perfect seal or permatex form-a-gasket #3 on bolt threads.
Criss cross pattern , 6-9 ft lbs first pass 15-20 ft lbs finial pass.

Note; inspect the cover VERY carefully for a small crack near where the dipstick screws in. 9 times out of 10 I find a crack there when the threads have pulled out.

For reference.
The drain and oil level plugs are 60-84 in. lbs
the dip stick is 48-72 in. lb.
