Hello, I'm a newbie, & I hope I posted this in the right place, if not can someone direct me where to post this.. I just purchased a 14' deep V, with a 650 Mercury with tilt & trim. I looked at the plate after I got it home & it says "recommended HP is 55hp".. will my 65 hp be bad for this boat? should I sell the boat & look for a boat that will take the 65hp, or should I sell the motor & look for a 55hp? Would would happen if I just leave the 65 on this boat??
Thanks in advance..

Re: Right size motor

Well, 10 HP isn't a major overpower, but you say you are a newbie.

It is tough enough for a newbie to become a successful boater without an overpowered boat.

I suggest changing engines to, say, a 40HP. That is over the guideline of 70% of rated HP and will be a much easier package to manage while you gain sea experience.

If it were mine I would leave it as is but that is personal choice. An additional 10hp is not a significant increase when talking about a rated 55hp. Things to consider are, does the motor run well? Is the boats transom in good condition? Do YOU feel comfortable leaving the 65 on? Have you had it on the water yet to see how it handles?

The one issue you should give some thought to is insurance. If you ever had an "incident" and the insurance company and/or law enforcement gets involved and finds you are over powered, that could be a problem.
