Hello,

On my 77 Johnson 115 this morning at the ramp, and switching from forward to reverse at idle I began to hear a very distinct, clear single ping (like a ringing bell) sound each time I came out of gear. I have not pulled the plug yet to check for shavings in the lower unit, just wondering if this sound is a tell tale of any specific problem I should be looking for, either in the lower unit, powerhead, or prop/hub. I have not experienced it coming out of gear under load ever. It has always chattered a little going into gear, but generally has extremely positive engagement. Earlier this season I replaced one of the shift linkage cables that had stretched/ casing split to the point I was not able to get into reverse, but that was 20+ hours running time ago.

Thanks In Advance,

George

Check the gear oil and also check to see if the prop is loose or if something is inside the gearcase housing where it can make contact with the prop.

TMD

Yeah, what he said! I can't imagine anything ringing while immersed in gear lube. :)
