Rip in cylinder head gasket

I pulled the cylinder head gasket off and found a small rip about the size of a pencil eraser next to the top cylinder. It is very clean inside the top cylinder. At the rip it looks "dirty" like exhaust is getting out from the cylinder to the cooling water. Could the water enter in to the cylinder there and cause water to come out of the top spark plug and make the engine bog. It's a 25HP Johnson. I have other posts about this motor(water out of spark plug) (25HPjohnson bogs down). Thank You

Hey shooter,
Sounds like you've found your problem. You've been steam cleaning that upper cylinder. Replace the head gasket & you're in business again. Haven't read your other posts so I don't know if I'm repeating anything. Good Luck!
Backlash

Re: Rip in cylinder head gasket

Thanks for the reply Backlash, I've been purchasing parts and tools all day for the motor so I can get a start on it just to find out that my local omc dealer dont have any head gaskets in stock and the order won't be up until Wednesday. I guess the motor will be nice and clean by the time they get in. Thanks again hope this works.
Jay

Hey again shooter,
While you're waiting for the gasket...take the time to make sure the head is perfectly flat. A machine shop can do it for you or you can do it yourself with a sheet of emery cloth and a guaranteed flat surface (I use a sheet of 3/8" plate glass). ;) Just make sure that you clean the head thoroughly after truing it up.
Backlash

Re: Rip in cylinder head gasket

Thanks again Backlash, Cleaned and ready to go. Should I use any kind of gasket seal with the head gasket, two exhaust cover gaskets or the thermostat gasket ? ( both sides of gasket?).Also since Iam changing the thermostat would it be wise to change the impeller, if so is it as tuff as the manual shows or is pull off the lower unit and it's right on top. (pretty much).
Sorry for all the questions..but working on these engines is new to me, and I must say iam having fun doing it.
Again thanks for all your help.
Jay
