Depends on the manifolds and gaskets.

'80's OMC, Cast Iron. Gaskets are due in today sometime, don't know their composition and I assume they are an OMC OEM part.

Re: Riser Gasket Question

Kagee,I put new manifolds and risers on this Spring and the Osco instructions stated NOT to use any sealants.I called the Osco techline and spoke to a tech and he told me the instructions state that, because there is a good chance of most people using too much sealant and clogging the passage ways when you tighten things down.He told me that they do recommend sealant but the correct amount which is only a little.Charlie

Re: Riser Gasket Question

I used a spray made by permatex (I think) called Hi-Tack.I sprayed each side of the gasket. This was the best choice for me so there is no chance of excess sealant squeezing in to anywhere it does not belong. The hi-tack is thin compared to most sealants.Charlie

Re: Riser Gasket Question

I thought Hi Tack was just a sticky substance to hold gaskets in place until you got a bolt or 2 through them?? Not really a sealant??

Re: Riser Gasket Question

Yes and no.It does exactly what you say but it also creates a bond which is what the correct amount of sealant does.Charlie

Re: Riser Gasket Question

The gasket itself is supposed to be the sealant.
Otherwise, what is a gasket?

If you feel the need for a sealant, use sealants in _thin_ amounts, and you should be ok. Never use sillycone (RTV). Permatex #2 or the Hi Tack that charlie talked about are both ok.

What John at Osco did say to charlie, or said unclearly, was that thick applications of gasket sealant will prevent proper tightening of the riser to the gasket, thus preventing compression of the gasket, and in the end will just move out of the way of the water that tries to come through it - CAUSING leaks, not sealing them.
