Riser inspection

How do you inspect the risers. I have a pair that are 2 years old, I run saltwater into them and flush every time.

Im about to replace the exhaust hose that connects to the riser, due to it leaking on the connection to the outdrive side. The outdrive side is slowly wearing away after more than 30 years of use, so Im going to need a slightly longer section of exhaust hose this time.

Anyway, I pulled the hose off and the riser is clogged on the bottom some. My question is, do you clear it out and inspect the water jackets or just replace the riser?

What is the true go/no go test for a riser, and a manifold??

Re: Riser inspection

Risers shoukd last 10-20 years. To test a riser hook up a hose and turn on the water.Flush!!!!It should have no restraint. The manifold should flo the same. How old are the manifolds? They last about the same as thje risers. If you replaced the risers you should do the manifolds too.Unless they are freshwater cooled(antifreeze).Jerry

Not a chance in salt water! maybe 3 or 4.

Risers will go before the manifolds. I tend to get two risers out of every one manifold. You want to inspect the junction between the manifold and the riser and make sure there is at least 1/4" of metal on all the mating surfaces. If you don't replace them, make sure the mating surface is flat and use new OEM gaskets and torque them to the proper spec.

Re: Riser inspection

I think he is talking about hooking a hose to the front of the manifold after removing the hose from the thermostat cover.

Anyway thanks for the info.
