Has anyone ever used this? And if so, is it any good or worth the price tag on an old kicker?

If you are talking about the one that is bolted to the skeg, the reports are poor. When you get into gravel or rocks, they get jammed between the gaurd and the prop blades, the result is a broken prop. The round one that mounts to the AV plate and skeg works better.

From my understanding of the two types, the river runner is used for your main outboard, and can be used for higher speeds. The prop guard is designed more for the auxiliary kicker, for slower speeds.

Anyway, I've used the river runner for several years, and I'm happy with it's effectiveness. Before I put one on, the Skagit River took its toll on the old prop.

You can get both types in sizes to fit small and large motors, they do protect the prop and are much better than nothing, but people that use the skeg mounted one on kickers report more problems.

Re: river runner skeg and prop guard???

I will tell you this way i gave right at $100 for mine on my 25hp nissan. i was gonna buy a stainless steel prop but these guys on here steered me the oppisite way because of damage to my lower unit. so i bought one of these and i greatly like it. now when i hit on the river my motor just kicks strait out of the water. (i would only use it on a motor without trim and tilt if it were me) no damage to prop. when it got so shallow where i couldn't run my boat before because of chewed up rocksi had to stop or shut my motor off float over and just pull my boat back up by hand before... now when it gets that shallow i just let my motor pretty much idle over all that stuff with just enough power to the throttle to push me up the current and be able to steer... I highly reccomend for a motor w/o trim/tilt and smaller enough for the underwater debris to just the motor up when running trough the water anymore q's just ask..
duckslayingpro

duckslayingpro,

So did you get the River Runner, or the Prop Guard?

Why would you say not to use it on a tilt 'n trim. It seems like it would protect the prop from getting chewed up? At high speeds, if you hit something hard it probably wouldn't matter, but it offers prop protection at slower speeds.
