Rochester Quadrajet Problem

Hello,
I have a 1988 Trophy 2460 with a OMC Cobra 5.7 with a Rochester Quadrajet.

A few weeks ago, I installed a rebuilt Quadrajet, which greatly helped performance, but when I installed it, I reused the old carb to manifold gaskets and spacer. Last week I got new gaskets and spacer so I threw away the old ones and installed the new ones. Immediately, I had issues.

After installing the new spacer and gaskets, I started the boat, and the idle was very high. It was over 2500 rpms. I used some carb cleaner to check for leaks and I didn't find any. I adjusted the idle then went for a sea trial. The performance was terrible at all rpms. The boat couldn't get on plane. 13mph max.

What could have caused this?

I have since noticed that there are different types of gaskets and spacers. Some are open in the middle and some seperate the four throttle plate bores. I have tried different types between the carb and spacer and between the spacer and manifold. I even tried both types of spacers(open in the middle and one that separates the bores). Perhaps I'm supposed to use a specific combination of these?

Could I have damaged something on the carb when I first replaced the gaskets?

What else could it be?

My next step will be putting on my old carb. My old carb ran ok except for the secondaries, so that should at least let me know whether or not it's the carb.

Thanks!

You should use one which was designed for your intake. Don't see you damaging anything with the carb, my guess is you have a vacuum leak. Pull the carb off and see if the gasket impression is made without distortion. Also check that the linkage is not binding or rubbing against something. Remove the cable and see if it idles correctly.

One other possibility, is the present carb the same CFM as the old one? If you went with a larger CFM looking for more performance, you could be bogging now because there is too much open area at every RPM allowing more air then fuel as with the previous carb. And that reduces the snappy response and any performance through the entire range. JMHO

I have rebuild many q jets and from the sound of it, you do have a leak. If it happened when you changed gaskets, make sure the new gasket isn't hanging up your secondarys. Also make sure you hooked up all the vacuum lines iv made that mistake many times
