What types of carburetors can I use to replace the Quadrajet? Should I stick with the Quadrajet or is there a better choice?

Edelbrock. Have had a couple Holly's over the years. Holly’s work great when they work but once they go south it never seems like they don't work right again no matter what you do. Edelbrock marine carb’s are as tough as nails.
ps also try e-bay

I tried that one from Summit Racing too. But it looked like a pain down below to switch over the linkage so I sent the Edelbrock back to Summit & just stuck with the Quadrajet. I don't think the Rochesters are bad, just expensive. Actually, they are a pretty good carb. The same thing happened with a holley 2 bbl. Orderded it from Summit & the linkage looked like a pain to switch so I sent it back too & it was a holley 2 bbl, same as the one I was replacing but newer I guess.

Re: Rochester Quadrajet Substitute

it's tough to beat a quadrajet. for some reason they are thought of as hard to rebuild but actually is not too bad. it's very important to pay attention to all adjustments upon reassembly. I haven't seen another brand carb outperform a good quadrajet yet. good luck

I think the qudrajet is a good carb, simple, dependable easy to work on. Most of the problems come from a bad float, they absorb gas after awhile.

Re: Rochester Quadrajet Substitute

I went through the same thing last couple of seasons. My quadrajet was a piece of quadrajunk.

It had been rebuilt, adjusted, rebuilt professionally, readjusted, new parts not contained in the kit, and it still didn't perform as it should have.

I finally purchased a brand new Holley. It was their substitute for the quadrajet. Installation was just as simple a putting on the quadrajet. No modifications and it only required minor adjustment.

The only problem that I didn't see ahead was the size fitting for the fuel line to the float bowl. Took the fitting to NAPA and they had the exact fitting needed for my application.

After the installation, my boat runs smoother, is easier starting, no more stalling after start up, better efficiency and better acceleration.

I just wished I had bought it before I went through all the hipe about "Quadrajets are die hard rebuildable carbs" fix it syndrome. IMHO, when a quadrajet is worn out, it is worn out, can it and get a replacement. Your brand of carb after that is the owners prefrence.

Good Luck

I vote for the Eldebrock......

Merc uses it on Alot of it's motors....
It's Easy to Tune......
And, It's CHEAP.....

Edlebrock AFB
Carter AFB
Mercruiser/ Weber AFB

Are All the Same Carb.........

Oh Ya, 1 more thing.......
It's a Solid Casting Main Body Carb.......
No Gaskets to Leak, Below the Gas Level.......

Re: Rochester Quadrajet Substitute

droyo,

Sorry for my late response. The model number of the Holley Marine is 4175, Part Number 0-80552, it is a 650 cfm.

Can't remember what I paid for it, but it was a very easy installation. The only problem I had was that I needed a larger fitting to accept my fuel line. NAPA had that in stock.

Linkage was a direct hookup
Had to run a new wire for the electric choke (made starting better than ever)
And that was all. I'm very happy with it.

My quadrajet was flat worn out and everyone and their brother swore up and down it could be fixed. I gave it to a friend that rebuilt it, still didn't work. Then he gave it to another "professional", he rebuilt it and couldn't get it right, he finally declared it "DEAD"!!! I think it is going to China to be rebuilt into something else now.

It took about 10 kits, various parts, and floats to determine this one was done for. Hummm, could have bought a new one for the money spent on getting it going. Best thing I did was to replace it.
