Explain to me how the telltale works and what it shows.
Here is the situation. I've always had real good pressure from the telltale when it's running and also when hooked up to the hose flushing adapter on the cowling. Last week, I noticed very low pressure from the telltale while flushing it. I increased pressure from the hose, and still weak telltale stream.
Took the boat out fishing the next day, weak telltale stream when running also, maybe half of what it usually is. Ran it hard also, 4500-5000, not all day but for periods of 5-15 minutes throughout the day, never overheated.

Followed the hose from the nipple where it exits the cowling up to an area near a fuse box. Pulled the hose off there and blew through it, didn't appear to be clogged at all. Re-connected. I will try next disconnecting the hose from the nipple at the cowling exit and see how much pressure is actually coming out of the hose while running.

The water pump, t-stats and PCV have roughly 60 hours on them. Since there is weak pressure when running AND just flushing, would that rule out a water pump, t-stat or PCV problem? If I get weak flow from that hose at the nipple exit, what next?

Re: Rodbolt - Question please..

always use MAXIMUM hose pressure when flushing that engine.
on that 3.1L motor the water pump sends water up,hits the powerhead adapter plate, then enters the powerhead in two places.
one is the EX cavity.
from the ex cavity it exits the cover, goes through the voltage regulator to cool it and exits overboard.
typically two things cause low pressure, the water pump is failing or the pressure control valve is.

Thanks, so if that hose nipple exiting the cowling is clean, I'm pulling the boat and checking PCV and water pump?

that and check/replace the thermostats.
if one sticks open water pressure gets dumped.,

Thanks, I'll post an update as soon as I can get to boat, work is getting in the way.

Re: Rodbolt - Question please..

Update...weak tell-tale seems to be getting weaker, sometimes not peeing at all.

I pulled the poppit, it looked good so I cleaned it up a bit and put it back.
I pulled the t-stats (while the engine was a bit warm still), one was closed, the other one on the telltale side was open but maybe because it was still warm in the block? It did close when I hit it with the hose to clean some of the salt deposits off. I have new stats here now and will replace them this weekend just to rule those out.

I ran the boat all day Saturday and several times I put my hands on top of the heads, luke warm at most, in fact I thought they would have been WAY hotter than that but I'm no mechanic so maybe that's the normal temp??

I did notice water exiting the lower unit in an area that I've never seen water coming from, but maybe I just never noticed it before?
If you look at the lower unit from the side, there is only one spot where you can clearly see the shift rod and what I guess is the speedo tube? When I'm flushing it on the hose or running the boat on plane, a darn good amount of water is exiting that area. Not sure if it should be and whether it's related.
What do you think? Someone from my marina told me the damper seal is leaking when I showed him this water leaking from that area.

Re: Rodbolt - Question please..

there is a damper seal just aft and under the pump wear plate.
if corrosion builds up under it and not cleaned when the pump is replaced it can and will leak air and cause low water pressure at low speeds.
3.1L engines typically dont have the idle water pressure that the 2.6L had, usually its tracked back to a clog or a bad pressure valve grommet.
but a 1999 saltwater use motor you could have corroded a hole through the water tube or the powerhead adapter.

See Part #5 in the attached file.
Last time I had the lower unit off, I saw this seal and thought to myself it
looked like it was in pretty bad shape, pinched, smashed, salt deposits, warped, etc. It is still on there but won't be long I guess. I'll change that after the boat comes out in a few weeks. Will update next week after I change the t-stats.
Thanks.

and underneath reference #5 you will find a small metal plate, remove the plate and clean up any corrosion.
its not the seal thats the issue, will work without it, its the corrosion that lifts the plate preventing the plate gasket from sealing.
