Roll and Tip w/Foam?

Ok so, I have been looking at the roll and tip method with the 2-part poly paint. I talked to the guys at Jamestown Distributors and they said bagger brushes are the best to roll and tip. I have seen a few examples of the roll and tip method with a brush and there is still brush strokes left. I figured why not try a foam brush to tip, that would make it smooth and there wouldn't be those eyesore brush strokes. Has anyone tried this? Thoughts? What is the best roller to use for the roll part of rolling and tipping?

Foam would be a bad idea. It wont give a smoother finish than a quality brush. I am not familiar with the paint you are using but foam will be destroyed by some of the 2 part paints due to the solvent in the paint. Not everyone becomes a pro painter by just buying the proper tools however. Some of us have more experience and some of us has less.
There is a lot more to painting then meets the eye.
I think the roller and brush method is the best way to start for a beginner.
Cool temperature will allow for longer drying time in most cases. That will help a lot. Start with a small section to get the "feel for the paint". Try a mini roller with a more expensive roller nap. Rub masking tape against the roller sleeve to remove loose fuzz.

Re: Roll and Tip w/Foam?

agree, I even tried using one of them foam brushes on my tin can Starcraft..with plain ol rustoleum, just smears paint around..

I rolled & rolled..no tippin..lol:D

Used a small closed cell foam roller, used for very smooth surfaces, like alum siding (which the hull basically is!) and cabinets...

Turned out ok for my first trial..

Re: Roll and Tip w/Foam?

I used the short-nap, closed cell foam rollers from right here in the Iboats mall when I repainted the topsides on the Texas Maid (pix attached) last fall. I used a Petit topside paint, oil-based...don't think it was a two-part paint, but I am pretty much paint stupid. I rolled small sections, then tippped with 3 or 4-inch el cheapo foam brushes from the box stores. Not entirely perfect but good enough to pass muster with me...I get out and fish and don't do much cruising and comparing...unless a nice bikini catches my eye, a sure sign that I think the fish were biting over there last time...must get closer to confirm.

Re: Roll and Tip w/Foam?

I've seen people who did a fantastic job with the foam brushes. It just depends on what you're comfortable using and what paint you're using. Marine paint really isn't generic or consistent in application across brands or different lines from the same manufacturer.

One paint may work well with a foam roller and natural brush, another may work well with a short nap cloth roller and foam brush.

Best way to find out if it'll work is to try it out on a section of primed wood or spare glass. That'll also let you know what you're up against in technique.

Try it, and see if you like the way it looks with foam. If not, try the natural brushes.
