Right now i have 1 battery running everything(boat came like this when i bought it). Its my main cranking battery, then i have a honda 9.9 kicker that i use. Its has a charging system on it which is hooked to my main battery. When using the kicker it runs my gps/fishfinder and electric downrigger, thats about it but i do have a marine radio and am/fm radio on board and two live wells.
I have purchased another battery and my plan is to wire my 90hp 4 stroke merc to it for cranking only, its a marine deep cycle battery. I want to hook the other electronics to the other one and the 9.9 charger to it but i want to put some sort of switch on it so i can use battery 1 for start only then switch to battery 2 for trolling. I've been told not to hook my 9.9 charging system to my main cranking battery as the deep cycles should not be charged all the time like that. Surprised me, doesn't my main merc when fired up back feed a charge to the battery anyway all the time?
Any helpfull hints on what i need or how to do it. Is this the recommended way to do it? someday maybe a bowmount trolling motor and a third battery but for now i want to get this wiring cleaned up.
I looked into a onboard charging system to be plugged in when not using the boat but now due to room i'm keeping the boat at the neighbours farm and its not plugged in anyway. Will just tow boat around the corner the night before and put on a charger, just makes more sense to me for now.
