Rookie needs help pleaseeeee

So I bought my first boat as a project. 1995 force 120 I’m not an outboard mechanic so I need some help. I have removed the lower unit to do the impeller and miscellaneous seals and now I can’t for the life of me get the shift rod into the lower.....

The end hooks up/slides into a part called shift control cam.
Factory manual????
Flashlight, shine down the hole and see if the cam's in place???
Probably not.. Then you need to disassemble the drive and locate the cam.
Then install it and the rest of the parts.
Maybe look on U-tube for rebuilding a Mercury lower unit.
Since 1995 Force used Mercury drives and ignitions.
