Hi all. I am the new owner of a 87 Merc 35hp electric start, console control outboard. I have only run it with the muffs on but it starts and runs great. My questions are this... does this motor have a charging system for the battery? How can I tell if it is functioning properly? This motor was originally oil injected but was converted back to premix. The previous owner ran it at 50:1 but I would like to run it with the Amsoil 100:1 synthetic premix oil and run it at 80:1. Does anyone know of any problems with this? Amsoil says it is great for any outboard. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks- Smitty

Re: Rookie question on 87 Merc 35hp

To see if the charging system is working, put a voltmeter across the battery and monitor the voltage before starting, and after running at high RPM. The voltage should climb to 13 plus after a minute or 2 when running at high RPM.

Lots of controversy on Ammsoil. I've used it and liked it....others may not.
