Anybody familiar with the difference between the T1 Diesel engine oil and the T1 engine oil.

The previous owner of my boat ran SAE40 Rotella T1 oil, so I went out and bought what I think is the same oil but instead of saying "engine oil" it says "diesel engine" oil. I have an old container that just says oil, The new one says diesel. Both containers look exactly the same but ones I bought says diesel and one does not.

Is there a difference?

Do people run diesel oil in i/o gas engines?

Anybody got any input on the best oil for a 470 Mercruiser ?

Not discussing the 470 but only the oil. Many folks like diesel (Rotella, Delvac and others) because they have more zinc in the oil. So the SEA 40W oil is the same as SEA 15W40 Rotella but the 15 helps it flow easier when cold. Same oil

So far as gas and diesel, use what you like or stick with what the PO used. I still use straight 40W in one boat and due to an engine rebuild, the builder said to use something else. Once the warranty is over I might go to something else

Quicksilver 25-40w is what I recommend using and keep it changed regularly.

I couldn't get 15W40 from our wholesale oil distributor so I asked the rep. He said that he used 15w40 in his boat. So I've used it ever since.

I buy my Rotella 15W 40 at tractor supply and use it in my combine, two tractors and my 470. It will be fine. The oil is not that critical, what is critical is changing the impeller in your outdrive at least every other year. Ask the PO when it was changed last, and if more than a couple of years change it. Gotta keep those 470s cool. Welcome to the 470 club!
