I have a 78 FourWinns and recently suffered some engine trouble due to my rotton stringers holding the front of the engine. I was hoping to create a temporary repair to the rotton stringers that hold the front of the engine to get me thru the upcoming summer. I wanted to know about what type of "goo" to use and the best way to put a band-aid over the chest wound of my rotting stringers. I was thinking if I filled in the rotton areas with some epoxy I could re-drill it and re-mount the engine.? I noticed a lot of water in the holes. Please advise.

Sounds like you need to fix it now, Uncle, or get another boat for the Summer and fix it in the Fall.

Good luck. :)

I was hoping to get some advice on what type of epoxy would best suit the situation. I realize it would only be a temp fix.

If it's that rotten, epoxy ain't gonna help. Be safe and fix it right!

it will need to at least dry out some. you might be one of the first to try it out, epoxy on wet wook won't work well.

Sorry uncle - there is no easy fix - well you could of course but I wouldn't ride with you. I'm not a great swimmer.

Re: Rotton stringers/engine mounts.

Okay so I went for it and found out that the motor mount wood is solitary. In that it is not tied into any other rotton wood. I was able to expose the box that the rotton wood was in and remove it. I re-created the wood brace with some pressure treated wood. Tomorrow I will glass it all back in and hopefully be back on the water for the big weekend. Come winter I'll have to tear up the deck and replace the other rotton pieces. Does anyone have any advice on how I should layer the glass between the wood pieces I made? I have three pieces that form a tier and upside down triangle, should I make a fiberglass sandwich out of it? Or just wrap the whole thing in glass?
