Hello all

I've got a 1966 18' Cresliner Fiberglass boat with a 1966 80 HP Super Sea-Horse Johnson outboard motor on it.

1. The plywood on the rear of the boat between the motor and the fiberglass is rotting, is this a problem, and if so what is the best or easiest way to replace? Will any plywood do? and does it need to be glued on or anything like that? and lastly should I re-use all the nuts, bolts, and screws?

2. I've noticed a small perfectly round hole in my shaft about a quarter inch above, and three inches in front (by the rear of the boat) of the gear vent screw. This hole has had some sort of foammy oil coming out of it, that smelt live fuel. Shoud I be concerned or is this normal.

Happy Easter.

what do you mean wood between transom and motor???

There shouldn't be any.. unless someone made a spacer... (not familiar with your boat, so don't know the specifics)

Anyway, unless its going to be glassed in, I'd suggest if you are going to replace it, replace it with a good quality marine ply.

as for problem number 2.. I don't think you need to worry about the fuel smell, thats probably from the exhaust.. but I'd suggest you drain the gearcase oil and check it out..

if its milky white, it has water in it and you need to look at your seals etc...

regards

Franki

Paul - There is already more information on wood rot on this site than you would ever care to read. Go to the Project Boats Section and the red Search function and read away. If you get stuck come back with specific questions and you will get plenty of help.
