1987 2.3 omc I have just installed a tune up kit ( points, condenser, rotor and cap) The boat will idle rough in neutral. I changed plugs end of last year. I set the gap at .019 with the advice from my local marine store.
What do ya think is the deal?

i don't think he was kidding, you wouldn't believe what people forget to do. Are you sure the spark plug gaps are suppose to be .019? that seems awefully small

Are the points opening correctly at the right time? I mean, there is a cam lobe in the distributor that the points rotate around on to open and close. Now, if the points are on the high point of the cam, they should be opened and gapped to the specified gap.

Check that and see what you find, and make sure they are gapped CORRECTLY, same with your plugs.

toby j, not nice. anesths just trying to help... and not a bad suggestion at that. May we assume that the engine was running fine prior to the tune up kit?? And to clarify, may we assume that the .019 gap is for the points and not the plugs?

Howdy, Was it smoother before? .019 is an awfully small plug gap, I've never heard of any less than .030 myself. If it idles smooth in gear but not in neutral, throw a timing light on it for kicks... maybe your centrifigul advance (if it has one) is sloppy. You didn't mention adjusting your carb., so maybe try that too.

Magsters right, it will never run right with the plugs at .019.........points are good at .019 and plugs at .035........

No I wasn't kidding. Do you have any idea how many people drop their car off at my shop either complaining about lack of power, poor idle, or they want more power. Then I look and find plug wires crossed, vac lines in the wrong spot, etc.

And .019 is really small. Whats your timing set at?? Generally you only want a really small gap if you have almost no advance..

-- Joe

Okay Okay, Sorry about that I took his post the wrong way. I thought he was just kidding. I thought if the plug wires were crossed not only would it idle rough it would run like crap as well.... it runs fine at speed & it starts on the first turnover. The .019 gap I was referring to is the point gap not the plug gap. I gapped the points while on the lobe of the shaft. So with that being said what do you think?
If I accidently crossed two wires could someone tell me what order they should go?

Again I apologize for my first post I just took the post the wrong way.
