I have a 1991 johnson 225hp that has e very hard time with cold starts. Once started engine runs very well and can get up to 5400 rpm pushing a 5000lb boat. Also engine starts easily when warm.

I have recently replaced the plugs and coils. All gaps are correct and plugs are relatively clean and carbon free.

any thought are much appreciated.

sams, It might be helpful if you describe your starting procedure in detail, and are you useing new fuel? Have you confirmed the choke operability?.

Try something, Sams. Place the motor on the muffs, and shoot some WD40 in the carb (about a 1-second burst).. Try to start it. If it coughs or tries to start, the problem is fuel-related.
Also, does the primer bulb get hard when you pump it?

Re: rough starting o/b

I have got more info

yesterday i pulled all the pugs to check spark. 1-4 had no spark and 5 and 6 both fired. i pulled a hot lead from the power pack and put it on #1 and that made the plug fire. Is there something that goes wrong with power packs where they send spark to only some plugs and not other or is it something related to the stator?

Yes, Sams. It sounds like the powerpack has failed. My brother has a V4. There are two on it. And they run abt 70 bukz used. He hates it, but I kinda like the '87 motor.
Other than tstats, it's easy to work on.
I hope you found the problem.
