Router firewall vs Windows firewall...

After installing a US Robotics Broad Band/Modem router with firewall the Windows firewall stopped logging intrusion attempts. I figured it was because the router was keeping them out. Then about 4 days ago Windows firewall starts logging unrequested access attempts. So I put any ISP listed as unrequested on the Banned Isp list. Also ran a virus scan and found new adware in my son's temprorary internet files folder.

I want to know how these sites get past the modem router firewall? Is it during the time that a user is on their site? An example is myspace.com After banning an urequested access attempt and putting that ISP on the banned list, myspace.com is no longer accessable. So they are the culprit. If my kid is on their site, then that site can get past the router firewall because its being directly communicated with? I can't think of any other way, unless the site knows how to get past the router.

Microsquish isn’t going to stop dog dodo first of all. Once you allow an IP your firmware wall is going to do nothing to stop attacks. Install PG2, AVG, and a better firewall (Look ‘n’ Stop or EZ) this won’t solve everything but it is a start.

I have the same router, the WiFi card that came with it is the worst I have come across.

I hear that the myspace.com site is highly popular, lots of kids use it, and lots of kids are getting into trouble there. My mom teaches 7th grade, and she has parents that have banned the site from their computers.

Sure you got the same router? Mine didn't come with WiFi. Its a hard wire system model usr8000a

azfyrfyter63, that site is trouble. I created my own signon, and went browsing. Found my sons id and his photo. At least it doesn't show his face. The girls he is talking to go to his own school from what I gather from reading their messages to each other.

Young girls like to put pictures of themselvs naked on there. Also noticed a high lesbian presence. They like to post pictures of themselves kissing other girls, sexy poses, etc. I'm sure they are breaking some laws with the minor nudity.

Mark – I’m not sure I would block the myspace web site. Same for the livejournal website. As mentioned, they are very popular. A lot of kids use them to blog and meet/talk with other kids all over the place. They are a blogging free-for-all. Unfortunately, this technology has brought us a new aspect of parental responsibility. If you block those websites, your son will likely be back on myspace at a different computer somewhere else…somewhere that you can’t monitor his web surfing. You will be far better off, and more effective as a parent, if you guide your son on what is and what is not appropriate web content. Positive influence in this regard will stick with your son throughout his entire life.

It was discovered the same type of thing was going on with kids that were not allowed to play with toy guns. Those kids ended up at their friend’s house playing shoot-‘em-up with their friend’s toy guns. And the restricted (I’m going to say repressed) kids learned not to tell their parents what they were doing, even going as far as learning to lying to their parents. It’s far better to have your son web surfing at your home where you can influence his choice of websites.

I banned the site mostly to protect my identity; credit cars, ssn, etc. The unrequested access to that PC started right after my son starting goint to that site. That is the only PC on the network that is having unsolicited access. If it is popular or not does not matter when hacking is involved. If he wants to see naked girls on someone elses PC, thats all the better for the rest of my family. Let them worry about identity theft.
